Gospel For Today's City

The Centre is grateful to The Henry Smith Charity, the Jerusalem Trust and London-over-the-Border Council for supporting this exciting initiative to equip local Christians for faithful witness in a changing context.

Project aims:

  1. To equip local Christians for witness in a multi Faith society – with a particular focus on neighbourhood issues;
  2. To strengthen relationships between congregations and clergy of different denominations and traditions, by shared theological reflection and action;
  3. To build congregations’ confidence in engaging with other faiths, in dialogue, social action and mission.
  4. To share this experience and learning with Christians in other contexts, through CTC's Just Communities partnership and the Greater London Presence and Engagement Network

Delivery:

The Contextual Theology Centre achieves these aims through its programme of courses and study days for lay people and clergy and a monthly group where Christian leaders study the Gospels together. This group produces Gospel for Today - a newsletter for congregational use, relating the readings to the local context.

In addition, Centre staff and interns:

  • hold one-to-one meetings with local church leaders, and give addresses at church services and groups, to explore ways of working together on neighbourhood issues, and in their wider mission.

  • complement the programme of courses and study days with a concrete project – identifying an issue (e.g. low pay, neighbourhood safety, affordable housing) on which local Christians can take action though community organising

  • co-ordinate action on this issue and ensuring it continues to be built upon theological reflection and prayer.
