Jellicoe Community
In the 1920s, Fr Basil Jellicoe (right) challenged the consciences of the rich - to transform the slums near Euston Station. The quality housing which was built still benefits low-income households. He did all this as the “Missioner” of Magdalen College, Oxford. Inspired by his story, The Jellicoe Community exists to enable today's students and staff to help, and learn from, London’s inner-city communities today through the work of the Contextual Theology Centre and London Citizens.
Internships
At the heart of the Jellicoe Community is a programme of summer and year-round 'Jellicoe Internships' in CTC's partner congregations, deepening their engagement in community organising. More details here
A wider Community
With generous support from The Mercers Company, one of the first Jellicoe interns will be returning to work for CTC to launch a wider Jellicoe Community - bringing together Christians in Oxford and East London who want to support one another in prayer, reflection and action. Laurence Mills (an Intern in 2008 & 2009) will work on this project from mid-September, so watch this space...
Jellicoe Events
This year is the 75th anniversary of Fr Basil's death, and there was a special service celebrating his ministry, and the ministry of Jellicoe Interns today, at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square on Sunday 25 July.
Interdisciplinary Jellicoe Seminars on Community Organising are held at Magdalen during Full Term, and there are two annual Jellicoe events - a lecture in London and a sermon in Magdalen College Chapel.
