The Jellicoe Society

In the 1930s, Fr Basil Jellicoe (left) challenged the consciences of the rich - to transform the slums near Euston Station.  The quality housing which was built still benefits low-income households.  He did all this as Magdalen College’s “Missioner”.  Inspired by his story, The Jellicoe Society exists to enable today's students and staff to help, and learn from, London’s inner-city communities today through the work of the Contextual Theology Centre and London Citizens.

News and Events

In Magdalen: Students have played an active part in the Independent Asylum Commission's (IAC) work - hosting a 'People's Commission' in Oxford; taking part in the launch of the first report, and working with other groups in the city to take its recommendations forward.

In the autumn, Mgr John Armitage will be giving the first annual Jellicoe Sermon in Magdalen Chapel, and Prof Tariq Ramadan will be among the speakers at a symposium on Education, Faith and Citizenship.

In East London: Members of Keble College Chapel visited the Contextual Theology Centre in March, and Magdalen students took part in a 2000 person citizens' assembly in April.

Students from both colleges are now taking part in London Citizens Summer Academy - getting experience of grassroots community organising.  More details here.
