Patrons
Professor
David Clary FRS, President of Magdalen College
The
Revd Preb David Patron, Master of the Royal Foundation of St Katharine
We
are very grateful for the support and interest of our two patrons,
representing partner institutions with a history of engaging faith, learning and
social action.
Fr
Basil Jellicoe was one of the most striking examples of Magdalen
College's historic engagement with these issues, and in this its
550th year, we are planning an autumn seminar on 'Education, Faith and
Citizenship' - in the hope that reflection on its history might inspire new
activities in the 21st century.
The
Royal Foundation of St Katharine is England's oldest religious
community. Founded by Queen Matilda in 1147 as a place of
"Worship, Hospitality and Service," it survived the dissolution
of the monasteries at the reformation owing to its status as a 'Royal
Peculiar' and remains under
the patronage of HM The Queen. It is the home of the Contextual
Theology Centre, which seeks to maintain the tradition of grassroots
community action established by St John Groser, the Foundation's first
Master after its relocation to East London in the 1950s.
